Medical emergency causes driver to hit two highway workers on I-97

MILLERSVILLE, Md. (WMAR) — Police say a driver suffered a medical emergency and struck two highway workers on the shoulder of I-97 Friday.

It happened around 11:40 a.m. on the southbound side near New Cut Road in Anne Arundel County.

Two State Highway Administration affiliated vehicles were parked on the shoulder in a work zone with their overhead lights on, when the driver plowed into the back of one causing it to strike the other.

One of the cars then hit a State Highway Administration worker and contractor.

The workers identified as Eric Gross, 51, of Crownsville, and 48-year-old Gary Henley, of Pasadena, were taken to area hospitals. There's no word on their condition.

Police identified the driver as Karl Gunther, Jr., 38, of Pasadena. His condition is also unknown.

Multiple lanes were closed for over two hours following the crash.
