HALETHORPE, Md (WMAR) — Multiple homes in a Halethorpe neighborhood were evacuated Tuesday night after residents began smelling a chemical odor.

The odor was reported on both sides of the 4400 block of Fenor Road near Virginia Avenue.

Fire crews conducted meter readings of homes in the area that showed low levels of an unknown gas present. The meters led firefighters to a storm drain, that had large amounts of water that needed to be flushed.

Baltimore County Fire officials say 21homes were evacuated while crews worked to settle the odor. Once the storm drain was flushed, the meters were read once again at which time it was safe for residents to return to their homes.

One woman, who initially called 911 after discovering the smell was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

It took crews almost five hours, before they were able to clear the scene.

Officials say the cause of the odor remains unknown but there is no threat to the community.
