Rudy is a K9 working for the Annapolis fire department. He can sniff out explosives and accelerant.
Rudy loves his job so much and with so much enthusiasms, he forgets his limitations.
"He still thinks he's a puppy, he has no idea he's 9," said Lt. Kelly Ruth, Rudy's handler.
Lt. Ruth noticed a problem with Rudy a few months ago. You can see a little hitch in his gate and that's a typical problem for working dogs.
The only way to fix that problem is surgery and that would cost up to $5,000
Lt. Ruth thought that might be the end of Rudy's working days, until somebody stepped up.
Dr. Sherman Canapp owns the Veterinarian Orthopedics Sport Medicine group, a veterinarian clinic outside of Jessup.
Dr. Canapp says he will do the surgery on Rudy for free.
Canapp explains, " Someone has to help these animals. They do so much for society and they give us so much. It's about giving back."
Rudy's surgery is scheduled for next week.
