BALTIMORE — A 12-year-old was shot near Dunbar High School, Friday night.
The gunfire took place during the school's first football game of the season.
"We were in the middle of the game, great atmosphere, first night of the season and we heard gunshots and everyone started running and the players got down on the field and everybody started running on the field,” said Lawrence Smith, Dunbar High School’s head football coach.
Police say the 12-year-old is currently stable.
Smith said the shooting did not happen on the football field, that it was across the street.
He said a lot of parents already feel it's unsafe for the kids to play at a field that's in this location and this just confirmed their fear.
"I always have to talk to a parent [about] why I want their kid to come to Dunbar and why I want them to come play for me at Dunbar. And it's never about the football program, it's never about the academics, it's always about the neighborhood that Dunbar is in.” Smith continued, “So I want to apologize to them and let them know that I’m sorry because of right now with this happening because they're right and I was wrong because their worst fear came and happened tonight, [because] of a shooting, something happening at that stadium while their child was playing.”
Dunbar was playing Loyola Blakefield at the time of the shooting.
