TOWSON, Md. (WMAR) — Parts of downtown Towson had to be evacuated Sunday, after a car crashed into an apartment complex construction site and ruptured a gas line.
It happened just after 11:35 a.m. at the Avalon Apartments construction site, next to the Macy's on the E. Joppa Road side of Towson Town Center.
The collision caused a two alarm response from the Baltimore County Fire Department, who immediately rushed the female driver to Sinai Hospital with serious injuries.
Baltimore County Fire crews then worked with Baltimore City Hazmat crews to evaluate area businesses quickly to see if evacuation was necessary. They did not end up evacuating any businesses but did shut down the parking garage near Macy's while BGE worked to shut off the gas line.
The area was opened up a few hours later.
Baltimore County Police is investigating the cause of the crash.
