WASHINGTON (WMAR) — The United States Supreme Court has ruled out a new trial for the man at the center of the popular podcast "Serial".

In April, a divided Maryland Court of Appeals denied Adnan Syed a new trial by a 4-3 margin, making the Supreme Court his last hope.

Syed's attorney Justin Brown originally filed a motion questioning whether his client had a sufficient defense at his trial nearly two decades ago.

He is serving a life sentence in western Maryland, after being convicted of killing his former girlfriend Hae Min Lee, while they were both students at Woodlawn High School.

Aside from the Serial podcast, Syed's murder conviction was also featured on an HBO documentary earlier this year.
