Lymphedema, or abnormal swelling, can occur in mastectomy patients after their surgeries. Often, lymph nodes are removed as part of the surgery, and lack of these can lead to lymphedema even years after the fact.

Dr. Gabriel Del Corral of MedStar Franklin Square Hospital is one of a handful of surgeons in the county performing lymph node transfers, a new and innovative surgery to combat the effects of lymphedema.

Lymph node transfer is a relatively low risk surgery with a quick recovery time. Patients have seen a marked decrease in swelling following the surgery.
