A 79-year-old man was killed and a 72-year-old man was hospitalized after they were shot at an apartment building for seniors on North Central Avenue in East Baltimore.
The suspect, a 65-year-old man and a resident of the building, was found in the building and taken into custody, police told reporters on Thursday afternoon. Officials believe he is the only suspect.
First responders blocked off several streets around midday Thursday as they rushed into the Pleasant View Gardens Senior building, which is meant for residents 62 and older, according to its website.
"Officers immediately entered the building, got the second victim out," Richard Worley, the Baltimore Police Commissioner, said at a news conference. "Looking for the suspect, SWAT officers were quickly on scene, swept the building. We were able to take a 65-year-old male into custody. We believe we do have his weapon."
The 65-year-old suspect lived at the building and uses a wheelchair, Worley confirmed to reporters.
The 72-year-old victim was in critical condition but talking to officers, Worley said.
One man dead, another injured after shooting at senior living center
"Unfortunately we did have someone lose their life, and hopefully we got the suspect and we can get to the bottom, and see why this incident occurred," said the commissioner.
Worley said officers arrived at the facility within minutes, and residents sheltered in place.
Several people arrived to check up on their loved ones, including Laura Thompson, whose mother lives at the building.
"She's okay," Thompson told WMAR-2 News. "Wondering what's going on. Police knocked on the door to check on her, make sure they were okay."
"I'm a little upset that this happened in a senior building," she added.
Police are still investigating what caused the shooting, and in a news release, asked anyone with information to contact homicide detectives at 410-396-2100.
