ESSEX, Md. — Kenwood High School is currently on lockdown as police are on scene.
Around 11:08 a.m., the school was alerted to someone in the building that may have been in possession of a weapon.
The School Resource Officers and Baltimore County Police Department responded and a suspected was arrested in the auditorium.
According to school officials, once the suspect was removed the lockdown was lifted at 11:35 a.m.
After a thorough search, no weapon was found.
Principal Carl Armstrong sent the following letter to parents and guardians of Kenwood High School the school:
I wanted to take some time at the end of a difficult day to thank you for your resilience and cooperation. Going into lockdown is a scary experience, and I would like to share some additional information with you.
School administration and our SROs received information that there was someone in the building who may have been in possession of a weapon. We activated our lockdown protocol immediately to ensure Baltimore County Police officers could respond to the school, safely apprehend the suspect and complete a thorough search of the building. I want to reiterate that there was no weapon found and that at no time were shots fired in the school building by police or by any of our students. Additionally, no students or staff were hurt during the lockdown.
I understand that this event was frightening. I am also a BCPS parent, and I never want my daughter or any student to feel frightened in class. Over the next week, counselors will be available for students to talk to. If you have questions or want to know more about what we do to keep the school safe, please reach out to me, or any member of the admin team.
You may have seen videos on social media that have been edited to include gunshots, or voiceovers saying that someone was hurt. Please know that these are faked—while today was a scary situation, all students remained safe.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me directly. I hope you all have a safe and relaxing weekend. I am proud of the way that Kenwood students and staff responded to an incredibly challenging day. I am also grateful for the collaboration with BCoPD and their swift response to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
Have a great weekend, and I will see you back here on Monday.
Thank you for your continued support of Kenwood High School.
Carl Armstrong
All students are safe.
