In a meeting of the Maryland State Board of Elections on Wednesday, Linda Lamone, the administrator of the agency, announced that she'd be stepping down this effective September 1.
"We've worked tirelessly to conduct numerous successful elections," said Lamone. "Each one with its challenges."
Her voice broke talking about her biggest supporter, her husband Rudy, who died earlier this year.
Several members thanked her for her work and dedication over the years.
Lamone has been Administrator of Elections since 1998, when the position was created by the State Legislature.
In a statement, the Elections Board said it hopes to appointment Lamone's replacement before September 1.
