Maria joined WMAR in January 2024 as a member of the second cohort of Scripps’ Journalism Journey Initiative, which brings experienced print and digital journalists who are exceptional storytellers and retools their skills for video-driven storytelling.
Maria is a graduate of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. She’s an award-winning editor and reporter whose work has been published in major daily newspapers, specialty publications and magazines. She comes to WMAR from The Baltimore Sun, where she was the Harford County and Baltimore County community editor. She also coaches and mentors early-career journalists.
Maria has been from the East Coast to the West Coast and back again. A Pittsburgh area native, she treasures the blend of Northeastern savvy and Midwestern warmth that Yunzers like her are known for. But her heart will always be in her adopted hometown of Los Angeles.
A diehard football and baseball fan, she loves everything black and yellow, except for her Dodger boys in blue. Since moving to the Baltimore area in 2011, she and her adult son love taking in games at Camden Yards. Watching Lamar and the crew at M&T Stadium is next on their to-do list.
She’s been very involved in the community, volunteering with various groups and with her church. Look for stories from her about some of the people who are making a difference in the area.
If you see her out in the community, feel free to say hello. Have a story idea? You can email her at maria.morales@wmar.com.
