A Better Tomorrow Starts Today Services (BTST) and Black Mental Health Alliance (BMHA) are serving as regional partners of the Can We Talk? Conference and Benefit Dinner, an event hosted by Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson’s Boris L. Henson Foundation. In Fall 2018, Henson created the mental health foundation named for her late father to eradicate the stigma around mental health issues in the Black community.

The inaugural conference will take place from June 7th-9th at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, D.C., with hosts of mental health experts, celebrity friends, and healthcare professionals. The event features 16 different trainings with over 40 presenters from across the country presenting on various mental health topics. The Black community continues to be met with hurdles linked to seeking a therapist, having the funds to pay for treatment, and dealing with the stigma that comes with receiving mental health care. Suicide rates have also doubled amongst Black children and adolescents in the past two decades.

BTST will welcome VIP guests to sit on their “couch” to discuss why this mental health conference is important and a needed staple in the community. The following day, both BTST and BHMA will be conducting sessions and panels discussing the social challenges that the Black community faces when seeking mental health treatment and care and how their organizations mitigate these.
