Each year, 3 million people over 65 are treated for falls in the emergency room, resulting in 800,000 patients who are hospitalized. The most common injuries due to falls are hip fractures and traumatic brain injuries.

Physical therapy can help minimize falls risks by working on balance, core, and also teaching patients how to correct balance and fall correctly if a fall is unavoidable. Those most at risk for falls should speak with their doctor about a PT program.

There are other ways to decrease the risk of falls, including medication awareness, use of ambulatory aids, eye examinations, appropriate footwear, and completing a home safety checklist.
