A New York man was arrested in Maryland for transporting illegal cigarettes early Wednesday.

An Anne Arundel County Police officer, stopped 25-year-old Ali Nasser Mohsen Ashubi of Mount Vernon, NY for a traffic violation at eastbound U.S. Route 50 and Oceanic Drive in Annapolis. During the stop, the officer later found contraband cigarettes and called FED agents. They searched the vehicle and found 4,900 packs of contraband cigarettes valued at $31,605 and representing a tax loss to the State of $9,800.

He was charged with a felony count of transporting contraband cigarettes and a misdemeanor charge of possession of contraband cigarettes. The cigarettes and the rented 2019 Dodge Durango SUV were seized.

Ashubi was released on $5,000 bond.
