Inmate is first COVID-19 related death in Maryland's corrections system

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Maryland Department of Corrections has reported its first death tied to COVID-19.

Officials say an inmate in his 60s has died. According to the department, the man suffered from serious underlying medical conditions, and had been hospitalized for
several weeks prior to his death. He was assigned to the Jessup Correctional Institution.

Citing privacy laws, the department would not release his name, but said "DPSCS extends its deepest sympathy to the loved ones of the inmate who succumbed to the disease."

There have now been 93 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in 10 different correctional facilities, including 18 inmates, 47 correctional officers, 3 parole and probation workers, 22 contractors, 1 clinical health employee, and two administrative workers.
