BALTIMORE — A local organization is working to make face shields for hospitals and EMS workers.
Open Works Baltimore Executive Director Will Holman saw a face shield design online that could be made using 3d printers.
He posted a call on the organization’s social media pages asking for makers with 3d printers to help.
Open works has more than 260 volunteers who collectively have more than 500 printers.
Once the printing begins, makers will drop off the face shields at open works.
Employees will sterilize them, complete their assembly and package them into groups of 10.
"If we assume a very conservative error rate of 50% failed prints with the current printers, we have at full capacity we'll be getting at least 500 prints a day," said Will Holman, Executive Dir. of Open Works Baltimore.
Holman said tens of thousands of units are needed.
Open works is accepting monetary donations on their website, they've already raised $10,000.
Holman said he will shave his beard he's been growing for more than 5 years, if they raise $25,000 by Friday.
