MONKTON, Md. — A local veteran got an unexpected surprise for his birthday.
On Saturday, family and community members in Monkton, Maryland celebrated ''Orville Hughes'' birthday along with service members from the Maryland National Guard Army Band who came out to perform for him. Hughes turns 99-years-old on Monday.
The celebration started at noon. His friends and family members stopped by to wish him a happy birthday.
''It was wonderful to see good friends come out on a beautiful day like today. It was worth 27 years of active duty.''
Hughes served our country for 27 years. He is a Korean War and World War II veteran and he is also a Purple Heart recipient.
