ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Electronic tax returns from 24 tax preparers will no longer be processed by Comptroller Peter Franchot’s office due to “a high volume of questionable returns,” Franchot’s office said in a statement released Monday.
The preparers work in offices spread between Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. A full list of this year’s suspicious prepares, as well as a complete database of previously blocked prepares, can be found online.
After using technology to detect suspicious returns, the Comptroller’s Office notified the potentially fraudulent preparers and provided that list to the Maryland Attorney General’s Office, who can help prioritized prosecutions with the Comptroller’s Field Enforcement Division. If taxpayer suspect fraud with their returns, they can contact the Comptroller’s Office at 1-800-MD-TAXES, or 410-260-7980, or via email at taxhelp@comp.state.md.us.
