A child is killed after being struck by a work van.
At about 3:21 p.m., Sunday Anne Arundel County Police responded to Andrew Hill Road and Bay Green Drive for a pedestrian struck.
A preliminary investigation revealed a Chevrolet work van driven by 37-year-old Michael Blair Gauthier was traveling westbound on Bay Green Drive when it drove off the road and struck 12-year-old Matthew Murphy on the sidewalk, who was with his mother and brother.
The van came to a stop after striking a tree nearby.
After being flown to Johns Hopkins Children's Center, the victim died.
The van driver was taken to an area hospital for minor injuries. Results of a toxicology screening are pending.
Investigators say the preliminary cause of the crash appears to be reckless driving and and failing to remain in a single lane.
After consulting with the States Attorney's Office, police arrested Gauthier on charges of negligent manslaughter and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
