LAUREL, Md. — An 8-year-old girl was struck by an SUV Thursday morning in Laurel.

The girl was struck by a dark colored SUV while boarding a school bus, Anne Arundel County Police said. The incident occurred near Shoreline Boulevard and Bayou Bend Boulevard. The child was taken to a local pediatric center with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The accident is being treated as a hit-and-run.

By midday, police said the driver, 37-year-old James Hunter, of the 3000 block of Lost Creak Boulevard in Laurel, had called police and turned himself in. He said he did originally stop and get out of his vehicle after thinking he struck someone, but the child ran off, presumably home. The driver then got back in his vehicle and went to work.

The driver was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. The crash's cause was determined to be pedestrian error, as police said the driver was not in a location where he was required to stop.

Police are investigative the incident. Anyone who may have witnesses the incident or who has access to surveillance cameras should call 410-222-8610.
