An armed carjacking suspect who crashed into a gate at the National Security Agency is sentenced in federal court.

On Tuesday, prosecutors announced 44-year-old Dontae Small has been ordered to serve 27 years behind bars.

According to evidence at trial, on October 4, 2015  Small and two other males were in Baltimore's Federal Hill neighborhood planning to rob people.

The first robbery happened after 10 at night on Grindall Street. Three masked suspects pointed a gun at a victim and took the keys to a 2008 Acura TSX. Later that night a block away, two of the three subjects robbed two additional victims, stealing ones phone.

Three days later, Anne Arundel County Police set up surveillance at Arundel Mills Mall, where Small had driven the stolen car. After observing Small return and unlock the vehicle, officers attempted to make an arrest. Small fled leading police on a high speed chase, that eventually ended with Small crashing into a security gate at the National Security Agency in Fort Meade.

Small then hid in a sewer for the next 12 hours until police could find and take him into custody the next morning.

During trial, it was revealed Ronald Hall and a juvenile committed the crimes with Small. Hall has a trial scheduled for May 16 in Baltimore City Circuit Court.

The investigation was a joint effort by several local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
