Edgewater man charged with distribution, possession of child pornography

EDGEWATER, Md. — A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the uploading of child pornographic images to a particular internet site.

An investigation into the uploading began in January as as a result of issuing and executing several court orders, detectives identified an address involved with the uploading of child pornography. In June, detectives executed a search warrant at an address in the 4000 block of Kings Road in Edgewater. Numerous devices were seized as evidence and the suspect, Robert Patrick Schmitt, was interviewed in regards to the ongoing investigation.

Child Abuse Detectives learned he is currently registered in Maryland as a Tier One sex offender.

After receiving the results from the forensic extraction of the digital devices seized, detectives recovered evidence of child pornography. Detectives then obtained an arrest warrant and charged Schmitt with two counts of distribution of child pornography and two counts of possession of child pornography.

On November 8, he was located and arrested without evidence.
