Former Navy grad arrested in home invasion, burglary

Posted

Just four months ago, Kevin Leyland was among the midshipmen throwing his hat in the air celebrating graduation from the Naval Academy. Now Leyland has been charged with burglary, trespassing and malicious destruction of property.

Early Sunday morning at 1:45, police were called to a house on Duke of Gloucester Street in Annapolis. A woman was home by herself when a man tried to come in her front door. The victim said Leyland went around the site and upstairs and kicked the door in. The woman then called the police.

Police found Leyland hiding in a closet in the master bedroom. When the burglar burst out of the closet, one of the police officers' weapons fired. As police tried to apprehend Leyland, he broke a third story window, climbed through and jumped out.

Police said Leyland has injuries from breaking the window and climbing out it. Police said they're glad the victim had her phone on her during the frightening event.
