25-year-old mother shot and killed on son's birthday

BALTIMORE (WMAR) — A 25-year-old woman was shot and killed in Cherry Hill on her 7-year-old son's birthday.

Thursday night, Baltimore City Police say they were called to a shooting around 5:20 p.m. in the 2700 block of Fisk Road.

Responding officers found the victim, 25-year-old Renika Howard, suffering from gunshot wounds to her upper body. Howard was transported to an area hospital where she later died.

"Everybody that know us know...that was my heart," Howard's best friend Kendra Brown wept, "Six years old we met each other and we have been in each other's lives ever since."

Brown said there is a vigil planned for Friday evening. Howard leaves behind a seven year old son who was celebrating his birthday that day she was killed.

Homicide detectives are investigating what circumstances led up to the shooting. Thus far in 2019, there have been six homicides in Baltimore.

There is a vigil planned Friday night at 4:30 p.m. on Fisk Road, the same place she was shot.
