BALTIMORE — 15 people have been killed in Baltimore City so far in 2020, in addition to the murders, several others have been shot and injured.
"Fortunately for us my brother was not a murder victim but having the violence hit so close to home made it real," said Ericka Alston-Buck, a Baltimore City community activist.
She says her brother was shot three times on Mount Street in West Baltimore, on January 2, when he was on his way to a friends house with groceries to make dinner.
"He’s forever changed just from being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Baltimore City bullets don’t have names on them," she added.
Alston-Buck is frustrated more isn't being done to stop the violence saying, "its a harsh new normal and a tragic reality."
However, she's doing what she can to help through the 'Kids Safe Zone.'
"My goal is to provide them an opportunity to be safe. It's bizarre that you have to create a safe place for children," said Alston-Buck. "It’s important to try to break the cycle of violence by dealing with trauma that young people are dealing with every day."
She stressed young people who are hurt will hurt other people if the issues aren't addressed.
