A Baltimore man who stole a car from a woman as she was taking her five-month-old grandson out of the vehicle pleaded guilty to carjacking Tuesday.
Michael Awosika, 39, or Baltimore, faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. He'll be sentenced at a hearing on July 3.
According to his plea agreement, on April 8, Awosika approached a woman removing her young grandson from a 2009 Chrysler Sebring in the 1900 block of West Lafayette Street. Awosika climbed into the car's passenger side, slid into the driver's seat, and pointed a revolver at the woman and child. He then fled, alone, in the woman's car.
The woman reported the carjacking to police, who pursued Awosika but could not keep pace, eventually losing him. A Baltimore City Fire Department captain saw Awosika driving erratically and attempted to flag him down, assuming he needed assistance. The captain began following Awosika, who continued to weave through traffic before eventually crashing into other vehicles at an intersection.
The fire captain approached the cars after the crash, but Awosika got out and fired two shot's at the captain's vehicle before tossing the gun in the road. A nearby police officer heard the shots and responded, finding the revolver containing three spent cartridges. Awosika was found a short distance away and arrested.
