BALTIMORE (AP) - Following Baltimore's deadliest month in over a year, Interim Baltimore Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle has canceled officers' leave and announced increased patrols across the city.
News outlets report Tuggle said Monday that officers won't be allowed to take leave over the next three days, barring emergencies, and police headquarters has been "scrubbed" for people who can be on the street.
Some officers have been reassigned from other duties to patrol in areas that have historically seen violence or where there could be retaliatory violence. As the already troubled police force struggles with under staffing and overtime, Tuggle says they're "leveraging federal partnerships" and encouraging residents to report non-emergencies through avenues other than 911.
There were 37 homicides in September, making it the deadliest month since May 2017.
