Officer wounded, suspect dead following shootout

UPDATE: The officer who was shot Sunday has been released from the hospital. The area of the shooting, which had been cordoned off, has been release. 

A suspect is dead following a Sunday shootout with police that left one officer wounded.

Interim Baltimore City Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle said the officers were conducting uniformed crime suppression in and around the 800 block of Vine Street when the incident occurred.

Our own Abby Isaacs caught up with Baltimore City Mayor Catherine Pugh who said the officer is expected to be okay and could be released from Shock Trauma as early as late Sunday night.

Baltimore City's Fraternal Order of Police tweeted that the injured officer is in good spirits.

The chaotic aftermath and rapid police response was captured on video.

According to Tuggle, the male Officer is a veteran of the department.

No details have been released on the suspect.

After cordoning off the crime scene throughout Sunday evening, police reopened the area around 7 a.m. on Monday.

And this is not the first shooting this neighborhood has seen in the past couple of months. 

  • August 7, 11:43 p.m.: Western District patrol officers responded to the unit block of Poppleton for a report of a shooting a 19 year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the foot.

  • August 8, 12:05 p.m.: While investigating a shooting in the unit block of Poppleton Street, officers heard several gunshots coming just North of their location. Officers take off on foot to the 800 block of Vine Street, where they locate a 50 year-old male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the back in stable condition.

  • August 20, 12:24pm: Officers were called to the 800 block of W. Saratoga Street for a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a 26-year old man with a gunshot wound to his side. 

  • September 18, 10:19 p.m.: Western District patrol officers responded to the 800 block of Vine Street for a report of a shootinga 28 year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the foot in good condition.
