A man was arrested over a week after he took off in a woman's car, with her 5-year-old son in the back seat.

According to police, the child was in the backseat of the car when a man stole the vehicle. The woman who owned the car told police that she stepped out of the car to talk to a friend.

The suspect, who had previously asked her for money outside of a Royal Farms store, then jumped into her vehicle and sped away. According to police, he told the victim he needed to get to Baltimore because his wife was having a baby.

The child was later found safe.

Thanks to tips from the community, police were able to identify the suspect as Eric Dewayne Arnold. Detectives got an arrest warrant, charging Arnold with motor vehicle theft and abduction.

On Wednesday, police got a call about a panhandler in the parking lot of the Target on the 2300 block of Brandermill Boulevard in Gambrills.

When they got to the Target officers identified the man as Arnold and arrested him without incident.

Police later learned the suspect's mother lived within walking distance from the Royal Farms store where the car with the child inside was stolen.
