A Virginia man was arrested on a Maryland highway for transporting illegal cigarettes Tuesday night.
State Police and Field Enforcement Division officers, stopped 20-year-old Mukai Mohamed Altairi of Richmond, VA for a traffic violation on 1-95 in White Marsh. During the stop, officers later found 1,650 packs of contraband cigarettes valued at more than $10,000 and representing a tax loss to the State of $3,300.
Police charged Altairi with a felony count of transporting contraband cigarettes and a misdemeanor charge of possession of contraband cigarettes. The cigarettes and his SUV were seized.
He was released from the Baltimore County Detention Center on $25,000 bond. A preliminary hearing has been set for September 14 at the Baltimore County District Court.
