ESSEX, Md (WMAR) — Police are investigating a domestic related death that occurred Sunday night in Essex.

The incident reportedly happened around 8 p.m. in the 100 block of Bennett Road.

Police learned that 62-year-old Joseph William Principio of Glen Burnie went to his ex-girlfriend's house armed with a gun, while she and her current boyfriend were inside. When the ex answered the door, Principio allegedly forced his way into the house and began to assault the woman's current boyfriend.

At some point the boyfriend was able to gain control of Principio and hold him down until police arrived. Principio was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he later died. The boyfriend sustained injuries to his upper body and arms and was taken to a local hospital where he's expected to survive.

Officers recovered the gun brought to the scene by Principio. Investigators don't believe any shots were fired during the incident.

No criminal charges have been filed thus far as detectives await the results of an autopsy performed by the Medical Examiner.
