MOUNT AIRY, Md. — Police have identified the man who they say is responsible for a double murder.

It happened just before 3 p.m. on Thursday on Bennett Branch Road in Mount Airy.

Police say 35-year-old Joseph Zujkowski shot and killed his wife, Heather who lived at his home.

For reason currently unknown, Zujkowski opened fire with a rifle, striking Heather. Then, the suspect opened fire on 18-year-old Noah Homayouni, a student at South Carroll High School who was outside at the time of the shooting.

Zujkowski and his wife had three children between the ages of 5 and 12, none of whom were harmed in the incident. They're now in the care of friends and family members.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit is continuing the investigation.

Police say Mr. and Mrs. Zujkowski were separated, and a protective order naming Joseph as the defendant expired in January of this year.

At this time, the motive for shooting Noah Homayouni is not yet known. No further details are available.

Anyone with information about the suspect or this incident are asked to contact Detective Owens at aowens@carrollcountymd.gov, or 410-386-2571.
