MANCHESTER, Md. — The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal has launched an investigation following a rash of mailbox explosions in Carroll County.

On Sunday before 9 a.m., a homeowner in the 3600 block of Lineboro Road noticed their roadside mailbox damaged and called 911. Investigators later found that an M-80 type of consumer grade firework had been placed inside the mailbox and detonated.

Later around 5:30 p.m., Deputy State Fire Marshals received a second call, this time from a homeowner in the 3200 block of Keating Court in Manchester, who returned home from a weekend vacation to find their mailbox destroyed. An investigation determined the same type of explosive device was used.
