A man who stabbed a Maryland State Trooper during an altercation and then was shot and killed by that trooper was allegedly the same person responsible for a series of malicious destruction of vehicles incidents, the Westminster Police said.

More than 33 such incidents were reported since March 10, police said, with similar incidents in neighboring jurisdictions.

Using video surveillance, detectives determined the damage to vehicles along East Main Street, East Green Street, Carroll View Avenue, North Court Street, South Bishop Street, and Baldwin Park Drive were all related, police said. The suspect in those incidents was Michael James D’Angelo, police said. D’Angelo was killed in the altercation with the trooper on March 11.

“Mr. D’Angelo’s family has requested that police inform the public that Michael had a long history of suffering from mental illness,” the police said in a statement.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Lt. Jeffery Schuster of the Westminster Police Department at 410-848-3846. Residents can also send tips by calling the TIPS line at 410-857-8477 or by texting 847411 with the keyword TIPWPD.
