In August of 2016, police were called to a home on Denning Road in New Windsor after someone found blood in the basement. Gerber's body was later found three miles away at the intersection of Old Washington and Muller Roads.

More than a year later and after seven days of trail, Wheeler was found guilty of Gerber's death on Oct. 25, 2017.

"Defendant certainly deserved a stiff sentence for his cowardly role in helping to kill his fiancée, Kandi Gerber," said State’s Attorney Brian DeLeonardo. "We hope that the sentence today, which also happens to be Kandi’s birthday, brings the family some closure and again express or deepest sympathies for the loss of Kandi Gerber."
