16 year old charged in murder of 17 year old after fight in Berlin

BERLIN, Md. — Maryland State Police have arrested a 16 year old for the murder of a 17 year old on the Eastern Shore.

At about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Vershawn Hudson-Crawford, along with his mother and grandmother, come to the Berlin Police Department to report that the 16 year old had been in a fight. Through the conversation, police learned the fight took place in a wooded area behind an apartment complex off of Route 113 in Berlin.

Officers headed there and found Dehaven Nicholas, who was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to the Office of the State Medical Examiners in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the manner and cause of his death.

The Maryland State Police Homicide United took the lead on the investigation, working with local law enforcement to process the scene. Residents and witnesses were interviewed, and evidence was taken to the State Police Forensic Sciences Division laboratory for analysis.

After consulting with the Worcester County State’s Attorney, Hudson-Crawford was charged as an adult with first and second-degree murder and related charges.
