A 19-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was hit by a stray bullet Sunday night.

Police say they were called to the 9000 block of Canterbury Riding just after 10 p.m. after reports of shots fired. When they got to the scene they found the teenage girl who had been shot, but no suspects.

According to witnesses, a group of young boys were seen running from the area after the shots were fired, but the number of suspects has not been confirmed and there are no additional descriptions.

"You hear stuff like break-ins, or like car thefts, something like that, but a shooting? I was just like oh wow," Cymone Fredericks, a resident, said.

Investigators believe the 19-year-old was walking from a parked car when she was shot.

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspects and are offering a reward of up to $1,500.

"At this point, we haven't been able to confirm how many there were in total -- it could be as few as three or four. According to other witnesses, it could be as many as six or eight," Howard County Police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn said.

Anyone who heard or saw anything in the area, or who has information about the incident, is urged to contact police at 410-313-STOP or HCPDcrimetips@howardcountymd.gov.  Investigators are also asking any residents in the area with home surveillance or doorbell cameras to contact police.
