The suspect wanted for this weekend’s murder in Ellicott City was arrested in North Carolina about 30 hours after fleeing the deadly scene, Howard County Police said.
Rane Dellinger, 20, was arrested Tuesday morning for the shooting death of 20-year-old Jacob Mauer of Ellicott City, county police said. Investigators followed Dellinger’s trail to Cumberland County in North Carolina. He was found in his vehicle in the area Monday morning and taken into custody without incident.
Dellinger was charged with first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, use of a firearm in a felony, and illegal handgun possession. Howard County Police and law enforcement in North Carolina are working to arrange Dellinger’s extradition back to Maryland.
Police said Dellinger, Mauer, and a friend were sitting in a car in the 4200 block of Montgomery Road in Ellicott City using drugs before 10 p.m. Police believe Dellinger fired one shot that struck Mauer, then fled the scene. Mauer was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are continuing to investigating the shooting. Anyone with information should call police at 410-313-STOP or email HCPDcrimetips@howardcountymd.gov.
