By day, it's an active multimillion dollar construction project unfolding on Dorsey Run Road in Elkridge, but just after two o'clock in the morning on Thursday, police say it appeared to be an easy target for a burglar.
That is, until an officer spotted a suspicious vehicle.
"He got out of his vehicle and walked towards the construction site, heard some noise and then approached a suspect who was coming from the site with blood on his hands and fresh cuts, wounds, apparently on his hands," said Sherry Llewellyn of the Howard County Police Department.
Police say the suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Mohammed Jennai, then jumped into a late model Dodge Dakota and took off.
"Our officer followed the suspect, with a supervisor's approval, which is required, and then called Anne Arundel County as it was clear that the truck was going to cross over into Anne Arundel,” said Llewellyn, “Soon after, the officer lost sight of the car."
The tracks leading off of Race Road in Hanover show where Jennai failed to maneuver a curve, lost control of his truck and struck as many as four trees in a crash, which would cost him far more than his freedom.
"Our officers were called to the scene of this accident, where it was deemed to be a fatal accident,” said Marc Limansky of the Anne Arundel County Police Department, “This individual was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy."
Back at the worksite where Jennai's journey began, police found evidence of where he broke a window to gain entry into a mobile trailer and a trail of blood where he accidently cut himself.
Workers say the suspect left behind the only thing of real value inside, a commercial vacuum sweeper, in a crime, which would ultimately cost him his life.
