A woman in Prince George's County was scammed out of $5,000 after she was told her grandson was in jail and needed her help.
Police say the woman received a call from a 'public defender' saying her grandson had been arrested for his involvement in a car accident. The man on the phone said that a court commissioner gave the grandson a $5,000 bond that would have to be paid so he would not have to spend the night in jail.
The alleged public defender said the woman needed to buy five $1,000 Sam's Club gift cards and give him the account and pin numbers.
The woman later called her grandson to make sure he made it home okay but found out he had not been involved in an accident. Deputies helped the woman contact her credit cards to cancel the purchase of the gift cards.
An investigation is still ongoing.
