ABC2 News is trying to help students in Baltimore have access to more books.
Only 11 percent of Baltimore City students can read well by the fourth grade, and 60 percent are below grade level.
Studies also show that lower income children have zero to two books on average in their home, compared to middle income children who have an average of 54 books.
As part of our parent company Scripps, ABC2 has been collecting books and raising money for the "If You Give A Child A Book" campaign. Employees have collected over 1,000 books and raised up to $1,000 to buy more books for underprivileged kids in Baltimore.
The 1,000 books that were collected are going to the Maryland Book Bank, who distributes approximately 150,000 books to children each year.
ABC2's Lauren Cook was live in the Book Mobile which kids can climb aboard and select five books they'd like to take home.
