Mammograms are so important when it comes to a woman's breast health, but the exam itself can be a turn-off. Many delay their yearly mammograms because of the discomfort of the test, but technology is changing that.

At MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus they are using curved 3-D technology to ease some of the squishing, "The SmartCurve is a new type of paddle that we can use during mammography. If you've ever had a mammogram you've experienced the compression or pinching sensation that comes along with compressing the breast." Dr. Jennifer Flaim, DO Diagnostic Radiologist explains."

Dr. Flaim says that compression is needed for the best results, "Compression is essential to spread out the tissue of the breast so that we can try to find all the small masses and distortions that may be signs of breast cancer."

With the SmartCurve paddle, used at MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus, the paddle follows the contour of the breast. This means not as much pressure, for a more comfortable experience.

As for you, getting ready for a SmartCurve mammogram is the same as any other mammogram, "There isn't much that a woman needs to do prior to her mammogram except to remember NOT to wear any lotions or deodorants. Those items can create artifact on the images and result in a call back for more images. Other than that, keeping track of when you are due for your mammogram to stay on track for annual screening."
