Day In The Life - GBMC General Operating Room

Posted
and last updated

On any given day, GBMC runs 15 operating rooms. The team of nurses, surgeons, techs, and anesthesiologists work together to keep those rooms functioning properly and efficiently.

The nurses have a team huddle in the morning to find out their assignments for the day. From then on, they are their patient’s main advocate. OR nurses meet with the patient to walk them through the surgery, and stay with them throughout the procedure.

Advocacy is one of the most important parts of the job, and GBMC takes it seriously. “They practice what they preach,” says Alex Maynard. “They treat every patient like family.”

After they meet with patients, the OR nurses assist in setting up the operating room with the correct machines and equipment and transporting the patient to the OR.

GBMC wants their nurses to feel empowered and enabled. They offer scholarships, tuition reimbursement, and more. “You have a lot of resources. It’s a very open community,” says Meghan Talbot, a recent nursing school grad.

Rachel Hellman plans to continue her career with GBMC for a long time. “They built you up. They allow you to grow.”
