STATE — Protesters gathered Saturday in Annapolis to protest COVID-19 related closures throughout Maryland.
In observance of social distancing guidelines, protesters were encouraged to stay in their cars while driving through the state's capitol.
The protest was organized by a group calling themselves Reopen Maryland. The group is comprised of Maryland citizens "concerned about the impact of mass shutdowns and school closures."
The group has also started a Change.org petition receiving almost 2,000 signatures.
In the petition, Reopen Maryland says "We are petitioning our governor, Larry Hogan, to immediately reopen our state's business, educational and religious institutions. Marylanders are struggling daily to pay bills, maintain family unity, ensure their children's well-being, and remain connected."
At the time of the protest, there were over 12,000 coronavirus cases and 463 related deaths in Maryland.
