ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WMAR) — The Maryland State Department of Education on Tuesday released it's 2019 School Report Card.
This year's enhanced version provides an in depth look and grades the performance of each Maryland school and the achievement level of students attending them.
Updated information includes 2018-2019 school assessment results, percentile rankings, Star Ratings, state science assessment results for elementary and middle school students, and whether the school's have improved since last year.
For the first time, the Report Card will include results of a statewide School Survey taken by students in grades 5 through 11, and educators in every school. The survey scores school's based on safety, community, environment, and relationships among students. There is also information on the performance of different student groups, based off the school's responsibility to educate students on all learning levels.
State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Karen Salmon, stressed that the new features of the 2019 Maryland School Report Card are significant in charting school improvement and equity.
“When we unveiled the new Maryland Report Card last year, we envisioned that this tool would evolve to remain relevant and important in school improvement efforts statewide,” Dr. Salmon said. “We hope this will help everyone gain a better understanding of how each school is doing, and provide inspiration about how we can work together to make our schools the best they can be for all students.”
Improvements to the report card follows the passing of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, which requires states to develop plans to improve schools through accountability and innovation. Maryland’s plan was approved by the U.S. Department of Education
The Maryland Report Card website also features individual school report cards, which measure a wide range of factors such as high school graduation rates, student access to a well-rounded curriculum, progress in achieving English language proficiency, and college readiness.
