GERMANTOWN, Md. (WMAR) — Two men have been arrested and charged for allegedly attacking and robbing a man for wearing a Make America Great Again hat.

Montgomery County Police said it happened on Saturday in the 18000 block of Cottage Garden Drive in Germantown.

The victim told police he was walking in the block wearing a red MAGA hat when he was approached by two men later identified as 27-year-old Jovan Crawford and 25-year-old Scott Duncan Roberson who began harassing and questioning him on why he was wearing the hat.

According to the victim, he told the suspects that he was entitled to his own views and walked away. Both Crawford and Duncan are then accused of repeatedly striking the victim, knocking him to the ground, and telling him to take off the hat. The suspects then reportedly removed property from the victim and destroyed items of value.

By the time police arrived, Crawford and Roberson had fled. Later, while searching the area, officers spotted both men attempting to hide among a group of children playing basketball, and took them into custody.

Crawford and Roberson are each charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted theft of $100 to $1500, and second-degree assault.

Both are scheduled for a 10 a.m. preliminary hearing on May 10 at the District Court for Montgomery County in Rockville.
