A former New Jersey police officer killed himself after a car chase that led state troopers to the body of his wife inside his trunk, authorities said.

Franklin Osgood’s daughter had called police Saturday to say her 61-year-old father was missing and distraught, CBS News reports.

That day, New Jersey State police were notified by police in Providence, Rhode Island, that Osgood was believed to be traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike.

When authorities located Osgood’s car, he refused to pull over and eventually ran off the road.

Troopers approached the vehicle to find Osgood with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities said they found the body of 55-year-old Mary Jo Osgood -- his wife -- inside the trunk.

Franklin Osgood was pronounced dead at an area hospital. Further details of Mary Jo Osgood’s death were not immediately available.
