Chipotle may add new meat to its menu

In the wake of an E. Coli outbreak last year that caused sales to plunge, Chipotle is considering making some changes.

Part of an effort to win back its once loyal customers, Chipotle is considering the addition of chorizo, a spicy pork and chicken blend, to its menu -- a move significant for a company that has left its menu virtually unchanged since its birth.

"When we think about adding something to Chipotle, we are very, very mindful of our overall efficiencies in the kitchen, in cooking, in throughout and in ease of ordering for the customer," Chipotle co-Ceo Steve Ells said, according to Business Insider.

But the company is willing consider this particular alteration.

When chorizo was tested in Kansas City stores last year, the item was "very, very popular with our loyal customers," another co-CEO, Monty Moran, explained.

Executives are hoping the change might prompt a rise in revenue, which has reportedly dropped 23.4% to $834.5 million in the first quarter, as the company reported on Tuesday.
Same-store sales dropped nearly 30%.

According to Eater, the company also plans to implement a new rewards program, similar to the free burrito promotion the company hosted in winter.
