A Pennsylvania woman who police say stole more than $1.5 million from church collections will avoid jail time.
WNEP-TV reports 60-year-old Dawn Stevens, of Reeders, was sentenced to one year of house arrest with electronic monitoring Monday. She previously pleaded guilty to felony theft.
The Diocese of Scranton says Stevens had been the bookkeeper of St. Luke's Parish in Stroudsburg for 17 years before her arrest in 2015. Authorities say the theft took place over a nine-year period.
The Diocese did not give a motive to Stevens' alleged theft. Stevens has been ordered to repay $2.1 million to the church to replace the stolen funds and cover court costs.
A man who answered the door at Stevens' residence denied requests for comment.
