Those eager to make their voices heard get their chance beginning Thursday.
The Maryland’s Republican and Democratic primary elections take place on June 26, but voters have opportunities to cast their ballots ahead of time.
The Maryland’s Republican and Democratic primary elections take place on June 26, but the State Board of Elections will open 78 early voting centers across the state from June 14 through June 21. The centers will open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., including Saturday and Sunday.
The Board of Elections maintains a list of locations on their website, and voters may use any early voting place in their home county.
The goal of early voting is to increase access and convenience for voters, said Erin Perrone, Director of Election Reform and Management for the State Board of Elections, providing an eight-day window to vote, and more geographic flexibility in poling places.
“So, if a voter is running errands over the weekend and is close to an early voting center in their registered county,” Perrone explained, “he or she can stop by and vote too.”
Anyone who is registered to vote may partake in early voting. If you are not registered prior to when early voting begins, you can register at the early voting locations in the county where you live. You will need to bring a document proving your name and address, such as a Maryland-issued driver’s license or identification card, a U.S. passport, an employee, military or student ID card, a change of address card, or a paycheck, bank statement, or utility bill dated within the three months prior to Election Day.
Registered voters that need to change their information can do so at early voting locations as well, but they cannot change their party affiliation. Party affiliation can be changed up until Tuesday, June 5 for the primaries.
In 2007, the Maryland General Assembly approved a constitutional amendment that would allow early voting in state run elections. That amendment was approved by state voters in the 2008 general election, passing by a more than 1 million vote margin, thus adding early voting to the Constitution of Maryland.
Early voting for November’s General Election will run from Thursday, Oct. 25 through Thursday, Nov. 1.
